Broyles letting Long decide Nutt's fate.
LITTLE ROCK (AP) - Outgoing athletic director Frank Broyles said Thursday night he'll leave it to his successor to determine whether Houston Nutt should remain Arkansas' football coach.
Broyles is retiring at the end of the year and will be replaced by Jeff Long. Speculation on Nutt's job security has increased as the Razorbacks have struggled to a 6-4 record this season.
Although Broyles is still the athletic director, he says Long should make the call on Nutt.
Broyles was in Little Rock to attend a reception for sponsors of the Broyles Award, given annually to the nation's top assistant college football coach. Broyles announced his retirement in February. This is his 50th year at Arkansas - he took over as football coach in December of 1957. Nutt was the 2006 Southeastern Conference coach of the year. Arkansas went 10-4 and won the SEC West.
However, the offseason was filled with turmoil surrounding the departures of offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn and quarterback Mitch Mustain. Arkansas began this season in the Top 25 but quickly fell out. The Razorbacks lost their first three SEC games and are currently 2-4 in conference play entering Saturday's game against Mississippi State.
